Specialist Rated Funds

If you are an adventurous investor our 20 Rated Funds in the Specialist asset group should hold plenty of appeal. You can gain the expertise of 17 highly experienced fund managers with in-depth knowledge of a specific field or sector, from biotechnology and financial companies to commodities. Three other funds aim to track the price of selected commodities.

We recommend that you view these specialist funds as potential 'satellite' additions to a wider, more diversified portfolio and, in the high majority of cases, to be prepared for plenty of volatility in their performance. Such funds can often generate rapid, high returns, but investors need to be mindful that fortunes can just as quickly turn for the worse. They should therefore be viewed as longer-term investments.

It is no surprise, then, that more than half of our selections are investment trusts. These have a fixed pool of capital, thereby enabling managers to take a longer-term view, because they do not need to worry about managing inflows and outflows. Some of our picks invest in relatively illiquid areas, such as private equity or alternative energy, making the closed-ended structure particularly suitable.

Investors should also be mindful that investment trusts can also trade at a discount or premium to their underlying net asset value. Our 'wild card' pick in 2017 has done very well and risen to an enormous premium, so has lost its place in 2018. We have another wild card for 2018, as well as a host of other specialist funds designed to offer investors diversification and a potential 'kicker' to portfolio returns.

Rated Funds Update: Rated Funds 2018

Review: first quarter of 2018

Performance against official sectors benchmarks have not been measured in this review.

Worldwide Healthcare IT has not been placed under review following the abrupt departure of co-manager Sam Isaly from management group Orbimed. Sven Borho, founding partner at the group, has assumed full responsibility for the portfolio he co-managed with Isaly since 1995.

Indeed, this trust has outperformed the more biotech-oriented International Biotechnology trust, which was among the worst performers overall this quarter, having lost 10.4 per cent and its premium rating too, as investor enthusiasm for US biotechnology shares waned.

However, Polar Capital Biotechnology fund managed to buck that trend, returning a respectable gain of 2.6 per cent over the quarter.

Guinness Global Energy was another notable loser among specialist funds, it dropped 8.1 per cent, yet marginally outperformed its benchmark MSCI World Energy index.

The clear winner among specialist selections was Allianz Technology, which gained 3.5 per cent, with its shares also moving to a small premium to net asset value. The open-ended Fidelity Global Technology fund also put in a relatively strong show, losing just 1.5 per cent.
