Franklin UK Managers' Focus Fund W(acc)

UK Growth

Rated Fund 2016-2018. One-stop shop to UK growth investing

The name of this fund reflects the fact that it brings together the expertise and experience of the entire UK equity team at Franklin Templeton – Colin Morton, Paul Spencer, Richard Bullas and Ben Russon.

Together the team has more than 120 years' investment experience and a comprehensive knowledge of the whole market. Each manager has a specific market-capitalisation focus.

The aim of this fund is to bring together a focused portfolio of their best ideas, ranging from large UK companies operating globally to small, innovative niche enterprises that will deliver superior medium to long-term growth. The portfolio is invested across the full spectrum of UK companies at all times, so could be seen as a one-stop shop to UK growth investing.

The managers are limited to a maximum number of stocks from within their area of expertise. Morton, the large company specialist; Paul Spencer, who specialises in medium-sized companies; and Ben Russon, who has a more flexible mandate, can all choose up to 10 stocks. Richard Bullas, the small company specialist, is allowed up to 20.

Once each manager has chosen his stocks, the proposed portfolio is assessed to protect against any unintended biases or concentrations, so as ensure it is a cohesive, well-structured portfolio, designed to meet the fund's risk and return objectives.

The team debates stocks informally as part of their day-to-day work, but also within a formal monthly review with Mark Hall, another member of the UK equity team. He does not make stock decisions for the fund but acts as a 'devil's advocate'.
