NGAM Investment Funds U.K. ICVC - Loomis Sayles U.S. Equity Leaders Fund N/A(GBP)

US Equities

Rated Fund 2018-19. Focuses on quality large companies

A focus on quality and capital protection means Loomis Sayles US Equity Leaders should hold up better than its average peer in down markets.

It is managed by the US-based investment firm Loomis Sayles, a subsidiary of Natixis Global Asset Management. The UK-sold fund was launched in 2013, but manager Aziz Hamzaogullari has been using the same process with largely the same team since 2006, initially at Evergreen and since 2010 at Loomis Sayles. He was appointed chief investment officer of its growth equity strategies team in 2018.

He runs a high-conviction portfolio of 30 to 40 stocks with a bias towards large companies. Together with a team of dedicated analysts, he employs a seven-step research framework to identify those few high-quality businesses with sustainable competitive advantages and profitable growth, trading at significant discounts to their estimates of intrinsic value.

The fund’s sector and stock positioning can differ significantly from the composition of the benchmark. Over the past year, the fund reduced its exposure to technology from 46% to 27%, but this is still overweight versus the S&P 500 index, which has an allocation of less than 21%.

The fund significantly differs from the index, but this has not historically resulted in higher volatility compared with peers, due to a diversified portfolio of companies with different business drivers. At least 80% of assets must be in US companies. The fund had almost 7% in Europe and 6% in Asia at the end of 2018.

Narrative and ratings content all as of January 2019.
