In the world of asset management, fund managers’ experience is often emphasised as an argument in favour of buying their fund. There is a widely held assumption that the more experienced a fund manager is, the more likely he or she is to outperform. In the November issue of Money Observer, we took a look at the data to see if experienced fund managers really did perform better.
We’ve also asked Darius McDermott, managing director of Fund Calibre, to recommend three senior managers who haven’t lost their touch, and three relatively new ones.
‘Nigel Thomas is a true fund management veteran, with more than 30 years of industry experience. He has run AXA Framlington UK Selected Opportunities fund since 2002 and, during this time, has established an exemplary longterm track record.
‘Charles Montanaro is a colourful character who has spent time in the jungle and was temporarily kidnapped by local natives. He founded Montanaro in 1991 and manages a number of funds including the excellent Montanaro UK Income fund.
‘Giles Hargreaves has a fantastic track record and has built one of the best small cap investment teams in the City. Has run Marlborough Special Situations for almost 20 years.
‘Blake Hutchins runs Investec Global Quality Equity Income and helps out on Investec UK Alpha. We’ve been really impressed with him and have met him a couple of times recently – he is on our watchlist.
‘Jack Barratt is co-manager of GLG Undervalued Assets. Jack was at Man GLG with Henry Dixon for a number of years. Has shown a lot of skill with the value style of investment they both use.
‘Laura Foll is co-manager on Lowland trust with James Henderson. Laura joined Henderson Global Investors [which runs Lowland] in 2009 on the graduate scheme, working her way up the ladder to become a fund manager in 2014 and Lowland co-manager in 2016.’
