European Equities Rated Funds

Until recently, Europe was a rather overlooked region, shunned by international investors in part due to concerns about the tide of anti-establishment populist parties, the weakness of European banks and lacklustre economic growth.

Investor sentiment towards European shares improved markedly during 2017 however, as the populist threat abated. Clear evidence also emerged of improving economic growth.

With shares on the continent trading at lower valuations than those in the US and UK, the attractions are clear.

The strong performance of actively managed funds and trusts investing in Europe has seen us widen our selection of Rated Funds in this asset group to 11 in 2018.

Our selections have notched up gains of between 100 and 300 per cent over five years, illustrating that strong stock-picking prowess can add real value for investors seeking exposure to this diverse region of countries and the companies that do business there. Several thousand are listed across the continent and for a few of our Rated Funds that include the UK in their universe, the choice is even wider.

This year we have also introduced four Rated Passive funds that focus on various European strategies.

Rated Funds Update: Rated Funds 2018

Review: first quarter of 2018

The quarter’s index performance broadly reflected the wider world: the FTSE Europe ex UK index fell -4.4 per cent. The EMIX Smaller European Companies ex UK index fared a little better, down 3.6 per cent.

Just one fund, Man GLG Continental European Growth, made a positive return in the first quarter. Its 1.2 per cent gain further cements its status as one of the best-performing funds in the region over longer periods. Marlborough European Multi-Cap was the next best performer with a loss of 1.9 per cent.

The standout loser in the group was the small company-oriented TR European Growth trust. It fell by 12.6 per cent over the quarter, but this was compounded by a 7 percentage point move in its discount to net asset value. That is now -6.8 per cent compared with a 1 per cent premium when the year started.

Another Janus Henderson managed trust was also among the back-markers. Henderson European Focus lost 6.8 per cent, although that loss was almost entirely due to a move from a premium of 2 per cent to a discount to net asset value on its shares of -4.3 per cent.
